When purchasing tools for an upcoming project, you may be able to find bolts and nuts that are made specifically for the requirements of your construction job. Here are a few types of commonly used nuts and bolts. You may find a fastener that is a better fit for your job than anything you had in mind.

Bolts

Bolts differ mainly by their head shape and purpose and their type of threading.

  • Hex bolts and tap bolts both have six-sided heads, but tap bolts have a full thread. They both have machine threads. You can use hex bolts with a nut or a tapped hole.
  • Lag bolts are six-sided for use with a wrench, and are usually large with a wood thread. They are sometimes called lag screws.
  • Carriage bolts have a smooth, round head. Chrome-plated carriage bolts are often found in automobile applications.
  • Elevator bolts have a similar shape to carriage bolts and are for use with a nut. They are commonly found in conveyor systems.
  • Eye bolts and lags have a circular ring on the head to attach rope or chains.
  • U-bolts and J-bolts are shaped specifically for tie-downs or for attaching to pipes.
  • Chicago bolts are used when a head is needed on both sides of the joint.
  • Hanger bolts have machine thread on one end and wood thread on the other.

Nuts

Choose nuts based on how you will tighten them, their shape, and the material to be fastened.

  • Hex nuts are the standard six-sided nuts. The square version is four-sided.
  • Wing nuts can be installed by hand.
  • Cap nuts and acorn nuts are closed on one end to cover the bolt.
  • T-nuts should be used in jobs to where machine thread must be created in wood or wood-like materials.

As you can see, there are many types of bolts and nuts that may be right for your job. Consider the work required to complete your project, and then find the tool that will work best before you start a new construction job.
