Motorcycle inspection

The vehicle´s technical inspection (ITV) aims to ensure that all vehicles have the conditions required to ensure safety and proper operation. The motorcycles inspection should be part of the motorcyclist’s routine. Being up to the maintenance, avoids mechanical failures and accidents and keeps the bike always in good condition.

Mandatory inspection

Most European countries already have a mandatory periodic technical inspection for motorcycles, some will introduce it in 2022 and three countries (Finland, Ireland, and the Netherlands) do not intend to introduce it. Technical Inspections are regulated by Directive 2014/45/EU. Before the implementation, technical inspection providers, industry and road safety organizations began a strong lobby to include motorcycles.

How is a bike inspected?

The professional needs to be able to perform the inspection properly, mapping all the details and identifying even small flaws.  During the inspection it is checked that the components are properly approved, that the mileage has not been changed and that noise / emissions requirements are met. The same is done on motorcycles subjected to inspection.

The bikes have eight basic systems:

  • Engine
  • Fuel tank and lines
  • Exhaust
  • Frame and suspension
  • Wheels, tires and brakes
  • Traction train
  • Controls and gauges
  • Electric

For some people warning signs and preventative concerns can go unnoticed until it’s too late.

The European Parliament wants mandatory periodic technical inspections for all motorcycles in all member states without exceptions.

Motorcycle inspection 125

On 25 February 2021, the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism asked the European Commission to include motorcycles in the obligation to make a periodic technical inspection. For small motorcycles – less than 125 cc the Committee calls for a prior assessment to investigate cost-benefit factors. Through this own-initiative report, the European Parliament has asked the European Commission to submit a legislative proposal.
