Regardless of the type or size of your project, you need to use the right tools and fasteners for the job. The integrity, strength and quality of your workmanship is dependent on the types of nuts and bolts that you use. Here are some guidelines for you to use to make selecting the right tools easier.

Materials

Screws and bolts are made from many different types of materials, including plastic, steel, steel alloy, titanium and aluminum. Steel and aluminum, however, are the most commonly used bolts in many industries.

Steel nuts and bolts are very strong, durable and resistant to corrosion. Their characteristics make them a popular and ideal choice for many building, auto, engineering, mechanical and construction projects. Most steel anchors and screws have a single line marking on the head.

Plated steel bolts have an “X” marking that is located on their heads. These screws are resistant to corrosion. They are not, however, as widely used as stainless steel bolts.

Aluminum bolts and screws are lightweight and corrosion resistant. Aluminum screws are not as durable as steel alloy screws, so they are not suitable for many heavy industrial projects. They have two-line markings on them to distinguish them from other types of rivets and metal fastening tools.

Size and Categorization

Bolts are categorized according to their size, class and grade. Bolt grades range from 2, 5 and 8. Bolt classes range from 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9. The higher the grade and class, the stronger and more durable the bolt is. Bolt sizes are determined by the diameter, thread pitch, and length of the shank, head and thread.

It is very important for one to consider size, class, grade and material when choosing bolts to prevent deficiencies, injuries and other problems. If you are replacing specific screws, try to use similar replacements. Consider the application that you are working on and make sure that any fastener you use is entirely suitable in terms of mechanics, appearance, size, function, and longevity.
